I remember in elementary school doing painting. All I wanted to do was mix the paint together, see what would happen... It always came out looking murky-brown-poo colored, the paper soaked in splotches and blobs.

Teacher said, "Oh, that's lovely! That's so good!" But I knew it looked like crap. None of the other students said anything because their output was much the same and besides, we were more interested in the process than the effect.

Teachers have this thing about art, that they shouldn't teach it because it will ruin a childs natural view of the world but they should show young children the how so they are better armed to paint the what.

Process is important and not the effect...It is the wisdom..many people know but can't apply in their lives..

Means of work is as much important than the result...if we wash a plate and think about how it will look like after washing..we tend to loose the process but what if we just concentrate on washing the plate?

I agree with Dave "it will ruin a child's natural view of the world"

thanks for the contemplative memoir..

The child is learning in this process of mixing...so the teacher was right in praising and encouraging...I just learned in a watercolor class a few weekends ago how to mix colors to get gray!
Two bright colors mixed together = crap color, but sometimes we NEED crap color. LOL You just learned it way earlier than I did. I hope you had fun in the process.

man, this brings me back...
I love how kids can be such authentic learners and soooo damn amazed at the thing they are living RIGHT NOW... for all the times I have said " oh, that's lovely! that's so good!" I hope that I might have been talking about what was happenING as much as what happenED...
this was great,
I especially liked the poo colour...
what a great remember when...
and a great anticipatory set...

Still love this process, and am happy that your teacher said it looked good, keeping alive this love of the process and experimenting,
take care

Reminds me of a clay bell I made in a similar class. All process, to lumpy effect but my mother insisted it was perfect.
I knew then better, that it was horrible.
Today I know better, it was a treasure.
